The castle was inhabited by several kings the one who did the most renovations was Frederick the 4th. He was also the most romantic - Doing most things to please his wife who he actually loved (not typical since most kings married for political reasons). He turned one portion of the castle into a theater.
And he also had this amazing gate built overnight. The intricate decoration has little “animals” in it and the queen got a smooch for every one she noticed.
The last king who occupied it was French (gained the castle in a marriage land-grab) and
he blew it up with gunpowder he found inside.
Here’s a photo from down in the city with the castle in the hillside above us.
After we walked around the town and ducked into the university library.
Later in the day the boat docked in Mannheim and we took a tour of the Schwetzingen Palace. A place where several royals”summered.”
It was a little but like a mini version of Versailles.
Here are some of the rooms...
And the ladies in waiting...
The gardens were gorgeous.
When we got back to the boat there was a lecture on the relationship between Germany and France. We see a lot of French influence in these German towns.
The lecture was a bit dull - Wine made it more fun!
